Executive Bodies

Executive Body :

The Executive Body is responsible for day-to day operations of the Society through its Secretariat. The Society is legally obliged to follow the Society Rules and the Executive Body shall ensure that these are followed. All the Executive Board members are expected to be able and willing to give the required time to contribute to the work of the Society on behalf of the membership. The executive body shall consists of the following five posts, elected at the General Body Meeting (AGBM)

  • President
  • Vice-President
  • General Secretary
  • Joint Secretary
  • Treasurer

Responsibilities of Executive Members

The President shall:

  • Be responsible for the general administration of the Society.
  • Take the Chair at all Business Meetings of the Society
  • Have speaking rights on every Committee of the Society
  • Allocate responsibility to members to represent the Society
  • Ensure that all the members of the staff conform to the rules of the Society
  • When the powers and duties of any post in the Society are not held by any other individual, they shall devolve the President. Exceptions to this rule shall be the posts of Treasurer and Returning Officer.

    The Secretary shall:

    • Be the custodian of all records of the Society
    • Act as the Correspondent of the Society
    • Represent the Society in all legal matters and acts as a signatory along with the President or the Treasurer in all financial transactions
    • Keep and supervise the Minute Book which shall be available to Members for inspection
    • Be responsible for organizing the Society’s social events
    • Oversee the day to day functioning and implementation of programmes agreed by the Society

    The Minutes and Record Book will Document

    • The proceedings of AGBM
    • The Proceedings of Special Meetings
    • Executive Body Meetings
    • Governing Council Meetings

    The Treasurer shall be responsible for:

    • The upkeep of the Society’s rooms, amenities and assets
    • All aspects of the Society’s finances and financial report
    • Overseeing account keeping
    • Ensuring that auditing is completed on time

    The Joint Secretary shall:

    • Provide support to Chapters for their activities, campaigns, and plan of action for the year
    • Communicate the resolutions, amendments, budget allocations, Conferences and theme for the year to Chapters
    • Support Secretary and President in resolving conflicts within or among Chapters.
    • Plan and conduct regional activities in collaboration with Chapters and Head Quarters
    • Keep a file of the members in each Chapter and encourage growth of Units and Chapters
    • Propose in the Executive Committee meeting, the campaigns, program or activities needed for the growth of Chapters.

    For logistic purpose and ease in administration, SOMI across India has been divided into four Regions led by a Joint Secretary for each Region: The following are the states allocated to the each Region

    North Region:Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand

    West Region: Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan

    South Region: Andhra Pradesh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Odisha, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Telangana

    West Region:: Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Manipur, Mizoaram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, West Bengal.

    Note: A fifth Joint Secretary will be nominated for supporting the headquarters. The HQ Joint Secretary will be working closely with the general Secretary Day to day functioning of the Society.

    Society of Midwives-India (SOMI), established in the year 2000, is a 10 yr old registered organization with a mission to strengthen midwifery, enable midwives and achieve safe motherhood.
