SOMI (Operating name of the Society of Midwives, India –referred to in the rest of this document as “the Society) is formally constituted membership based national level professional organization of registered midwives (RMs). It was registered with the Registrar of Societies, Hyderabad on 22nd November 2000 bearing number 9701/2000 under the Andhra Pradesh (Telangana Area) Public Societies Registration Act, 1350 Fasli (Act of 1350F).
The Midwifery Group at the Academy for Nursing Studies (ANSWERS), Hyderabad Initiated and spearheaded the formation of the Society of Midwives over a period of three years between 1998-2000 and its growth during the first decade of its existence upto 2010.
The mission of SOMI is to strengthen midwifery as a profession and enable midwives to achieve Safe Motherhood within a socio-cultural, equitable and ethical context. SOMI believe that every women is entitled to receive care form Midwives during pregnancy, child birth and during post natal period. SOMI perceives the mother and her newborn as an inseparable dyad and advocates for high quality of service for both. The Society believes that a midwife’s place within the woman, not only during the critical time of child birth, but during the entire maternity cycle and extending to women’s general health, and includes adolescent health, safe abortion, contraception and child care. The Society perceives the need to address gender and profession related challenges that midwives encounter in their work.

The International Confederation of Midwives has Associations of Midwives around the world as its members. The ICM’s objective is to advance education in midwifery and spread knowledge of the art and science of midwifery with the aim of improving the standard of care provided to mothers, their babies and family members throughout the countries of the world. ICM was founded in 1919 and it is a confederation of 136 midwifery associations in 117 countries.
The society of midwives, India became a member of the ICM in the year 2023. Information about the affiliation to ICM came at an opportune moment, one day before the Second National Conference of the Society of Midwives held at Hyderabad for the first time one delegate (Dr. M. Prakasamma) of the Society participated at the ICM Council held at Brisbane from 18th to 20th July, 2005. She actively represented the concern of midwives and mothers not only in India but also countries of South Asia. The Society can take its place in the ICM Council only if it is a formal member of ICM.
Any applicant wishing to join SOMI will have to fill and submit the membership form along with the fee applied to him/her.
